Athos
Mount Athos, commonly known simply as Athos, is a peninsula in northeastern Greece that constitutes the easternmost projection of the Chalkidiki peninsula. It hosts a long-standing Orthodox monastic tradition and forms the self-governing Monastic State of Mount Athos, an autonomous entity within Greek sovereignty. The polity is governed by the Holy Community, a council drawn from the leadership of its twenty monasteries, and by a civil administration recognized by the Greek state. The spiritual leadership falls under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
