Hilandar

Hilandar, also known as Chilandar, is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located in the northwestern part of Mount Athos in Greece. It is one of the twenty autonomous monasteries that constitute the monastic state of Mount Athos. Founded in 1198 by Serbian monks Simeon Mirotočivi and Sava, it has a rich history and holds significant importance for Serbian culture and Orthodox Christianity.

The monastery's architectural complex is notable for its well-preserved medieval structures, including the main church dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, numerous chapels, defensive walls, and residential cells. Hilandar houses a vast collection of religious relics, icons, and manuscripts, many of which are of great historical and artistic value. The library contains over 1,000 manuscripts and thousands of printed books.

Throughout its history, Hilandar has been a spiritual and cultural center, attracting monks and pilgrims from Serbia and beyond. It has played a crucial role in preserving Serbian language, literature, and religious traditions. Despite facing challenges, including damage from fires and periods of political instability, the monastery has consistently been restored and maintained by its monastic community and supporters. Today, Hilandar continues to be an active monastic community, adhering to the strict ascetic traditions of Mount Athos, and remains a vital symbol of Serbian heritage and Orthodox faith.
