Asciugatura

Asciugatura is the process of removing moisture from a material, typically to reach a target moisture level that ensures stability, safety, or usability. It is applied in many fields, including textiles, food and agriculture, wood and paper, ceramics, and pharmaceuticals. Drying can occur naturally, by exposure to air or sunlight, or be accelerated with mechanical equipment that provides heat and air flow.

Drying can be natural or mechanical. Natural drying relies on ambient conditions and can be slow and dependent on weather. Mechanical drying uses equipment such as dryers, ovens, or dehydrators to speed up the process and may employ convection, radiation, or vacuum. Drying can address surface moisture, interior moisture, or both, affecting texture, porosity, and dimensional stability.

Common drying methods include hot-air drying (convection), infrared drying, microwave-assisted drying, spray drying (for liquids transformed into powders), freeze-drying or lyophilization (for heat-sensitive materials), and vacuum drying. Some processes combine methods to optimize speed, energy use, and quality.

Several factors influence the drying rate and outcome, including temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, initial moisture content, product thickness and geometry, and the moisture diffusivity of the material. Excessive temperatures or aggressive drying can cause defects such as shrinking, warping, cracking, color changes, or case hardening.

Applications and considerations vary by sector. Laundry uses household or industrial dryers, while industries dry foods to extend shelf life, remove water for processing, or concentrate flavors. In wood, paper, ceramics, and pharmaceuticals, controlled drying is essential to maintain product integrity, minimize defects, and reduce energy consumption.
