Artriitti is a Finnish term that translates to arthritis in English. It is a general term used to describe inflammation of the joints. Arthritis is not a single disease but rather an umbrella term encompassing over 100 different conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, primarily the joints. These conditions can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion in the affected joints.

The causes of arthritis vary widely depending on the specific type. Some common forms include osteoarthritis, which is a degenerative joint disease caused by wear and tear on the cartilage; rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks the joint lining; gout, which is caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints; and psoriatic arthritis, which affects some individuals with psoriasis. Other types can be caused by infections, injuries, or metabolic disorders.

Symptoms of arthritis can range from mild to severe and often develop gradually, though some can appear suddenly. Common symptoms include joint pain, stiffness that may be worse in the morning or after periods of inactivity, swelling, redness, and warmth around the joint. The location and severity of symptoms depend on the type of arthritis and the joints affected.

Treatment aims to manage pain, reduce inflammation, improve joint function, and prevent further damage. This may include medications such as pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs, or disease-modifying drugs, as well as physical therapy, occupational therapy, lifestyle modifications, and in some cases, surgery. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial for most forms of arthritis.
