Arealmåling

Arealmåling is the process of determining the size and extent of an area of land or other surface. It is a core task in land surveying, cartography, planning, and land administration. The result is typically given in square meters, hectares, or acres and linked to a coordinate reference system.

Arealmåling combines field measurements, boundary delimitation, and geospatial analysis. In the field, technicians may use GNSS/GPS receivers, total stations, or laser scanners to capture the positions of boundary corners and landmarks. Photogrammetry and remote sensing can be used to derive boundaries and area estimates from imagery. In the office, measured coordinates are processed in a GIS or surveying software to compute the area, often using polygonal representations or raster data. For accurate results on larger areas, the curvature of the Earth and the chosen map projection are taken into account through geodetic adjustments.

The workflow generally includes: defining the area boundary, selecting a suitable coordinate system and projection, collecting and quality-checking data, calculating the area with appropriate algorithms, and documenting metadata such as date, instruments, projection, and accuracy. Irregular shapes are handled by breaking them into polygons; for curved borders, geodetic area methods may be used.

Applications include cadastral surveying, land valuation, planning and zoning, construction, environmental monitoring, and resource management. The accuracy and legal validity of arealmåling depend on local standards and professional qualifications, with reporting typically specifying uncertainty and reference systems.
