Aramidit

Aramidit is a high-performance synthetic polymer belonging to the aramid family. It was developed to combine high strength, stiffness, and thermal stability with improved resistance to impact and abrasion. The material is based on an aromatic polyamide backbone with optimized interchain interactions, yielding fibers and films that can be processed into a variety of products.

In fabrication, Aramidit is typically produced by wet or dry spinning to yield continuous fibers, which can be used in textiles, composites, or reinforcement. It also forms films and prepregs for composites and can be molded into parts for consumer or industrial use.

Key properties include high tensile strength and modulus, good dimensional stability, outstanding abrasion and impact resistance, and performance at elevated temperatures. It shows chemical resistance to many solvents but can be attacked by strong bases or oxidizers; moisture uptake is low to moderate depending on processing.

Applications include ballistic and stab protection, protective clothing, reinforced composites for aerospace and automotive components, ropes and cables, and high-performance tires.

History: developed by the Aramidit Research Group in the 2000s; first commercial products released in the mid-2010s; widely adopted in the 2020s.

Safety and environmental: handling is considered relatively safe; manufacturing requires solvent recovery and waste management. End-of-life options include mechanical recycling or energy recovery; chemical recycling and dedicated disposal methods are under development.
