Applikasjonsprogrammer

Applikasjonsprogrammer, often simply called applications or apps, are computer programs designed to perform specific tasks for the end-user. Unlike system software, which manages a computer's hardware and provides a platform for other programs, application software directly assists users in carrying out activities such as writing documents, sending emails, browsing the internet, playing games, or managing finances. The term "application" emphasizes its purpose: to be applied to a user's needs.

These programs can be broadly categorized. Productivity applications, like word processors and spreadsheets, are used for tasks related to work or study. Entertainment applications include games and media players. Communication applications facilitate interaction between users, such as email clients and instant messaging services. Information management applications, like databases and personal organizers, help users store and retrieve data.

Application programs can be developed for various platforms, including desktop operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux), mobile operating systems (iOS, Android), and web browsers. The way users interact with these applications is through a graphical user interface (GUI) or, in some cases, a command-line interface (CLI). The development and distribution of application programs form a significant part of the software industry, with a vast ecosystem of developers creating and updating software for diverse user requirements.
