Apexpredator

Apexpredator, commonly written apex predator, is an organism that occupies the top position in its ecosystem’s food web. It has no natural predators as an adult within its environment, and its feeding behavior influences the populations of prey species and the overall structure of the community. The term is widely used in ecology to discuss predator–prey dynamics and energy flow in ecosystems.

Examples of apex predators include terrestrial mammals such as lions, tigers, jaguars, and polar bears; marine predators such as orcas, great white sharks, and sperm whales; and large reptiles like crocodiles. Some ecosystems host multiple apex predators that may reduce direct competition through niche differentiation.

Ecologically, apex predators help regulate prey populations, prevent overgrazing or overpredation, and can promote biodiversity by enabling weaker species to persist. In some cases they act as keystone species, though this role is not universal. The loss or decline of an apex predator can trigger trophic cascades, leading to overabundant prey, altered vegetation, and disrupted community dynamics.

Anthropogenic pressures—hunting, habitat destruction, bycatch in fisheries, and climate change—threaten many apex predators and can have far-reaching ecological consequences. Conservation efforts include protections, habitat restoration, and sustainable management of resources that support both predators and their prey. In scholarly writing, apex predator is often contrasted with mesopredators and other components of the food web to analyze ecosystem health and resilience.
