Anticorrosius

Anticorrosius is a general term for substances and methods designed to prevent or slow the corrosion of metals, by reducing their exposure to aggressive environments or by altering the electrochemical processes that drive deterioration. It encompasses barrier coatings, inhibitors, and protective metal surfaces that hinder oxidation and related reactions.

Mechanisms of anticorrosion include barrier protection, where coatings or films physically separate metal from the environment; inhibitive action, where corrosion inhibitors form protective layers on the surface; cathodic protection, which sacrifices a more anodic material (or uses an impressed current) to reduce metal dissolution; and passivation, where a stable, protective oxide layer forms on the metal.

Major categories of anticorrosius systems include organic coatings (such as epoxy and polyurethane paints); inorganic coatings (including zinc-rich and ceramic films); metallic coatings (galvanized or aluminized steel); chemical treatments like phosphate or chromate conversion coatings; and corrosion inhibitors, which can be volatile or film-forming additives.

Applications span structural infrastructure, pipelines, ships and marine equipment, automotive and aerospace components, and electrical or electronic enclosures where moisture and salts pose corrosion risks. Selection depends on environmental exposure, mechanical demands, cost, and maintenance requirements.

Testing and standards for anticorrosius performance commonly involve salt spray or fog tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and polarization techniques. Widely used standards come from ASTM, ISO, and NACE, addressing coating properties, adhesion, corrosion rate, and long-term durability.

Environmental and health considerations influence modern anticorrosius design, prompting reduced toxicity of inhibitors, low-VOC and waterborne coatings, and sustainable lifecycle approaches, while balancing protection performance.
