Ansiktsskallighet

Ansiktsskallighet refers to hair loss on the face, specifically affecting areas like the beard, eyebrows, and eyelashes. This condition can manifest in various ways, from thinning patches to complete absence of hair in these regions. The causes of ansiktsskallighet are diverse and can include autoimmune disorders, hormonal imbalances, infections, and physical trauma.

One of the most common autoimmune causes is alopecia areata, which can affect facial hair in addition to scalp hair. This condition involves the immune system mistakenly attacking hair follicles, leading to hair loss. Other autoimmune conditions such as lupus can also contribute to facial hair loss.

Hormonal changes, particularly those related to androgens, can play a significant role. Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women can sometimes lead to reduced facial hair growth, while in men, certain hormonal deficiencies might also be a factor.

Infections, such as fungal infections of the skin (tinea barbae, commonly known as ringworm of the beard), can cause inflammation and subsequent hair loss in the beard area. Bacterial infections can also lead to scarring and permanent hair loss.

Physical factors like excessive plucking, waxing, or shaving can sometimes cause temporary or, in rare cases, permanent damage to hair follicles. Scarring from burns, injuries, or dermatological procedures can also result in localized ansiktsskallighet.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and potentially further tests like blood work or a biopsy to determine the underlying cause. Treatment strategies are dependent on the identified cause and may include topical medications, oral medications, corticosteroid injections, or addressing the underlying medical condition. In cases of scarring alopecia, hair restoration options might be considered.
