It includes components such as the air intake housing or air filter, the throttle body, the intake manifold or plenum, and the intake runners and ports leading to each cylinder. The design and condition of the Ansaugpfad influence the amount, temperature, and speed of the air reaching the cylinders, affecting engine performance and efficiency.

In naturally aspirated engines, the Ansaugpfad affects volumetric efficiency and torque through its geometry. The length and diameter of intake runners, the shape of the plenum, and resonance effects (such as Helmholtz resonance) can create favorable air conditions at different engine speeds. Longer runners generally boost low-end torque, while shorter runners favor high-end power. Many modern engines use variable-length intake systems to broaden the usable torque across a wider rpm range by adjusting the effective path of the incoming air.

In turbocharged or supercharged engines, the Ansaugpfad includes additional charge piping, intercoolers, and sometimes variable geometry components that influence pressure, temperature, and density of the boosted air. Thermal management is important, as heated intake air reduces density and engine performance. Sensors such as MAF (mass air flow) or MAP (manifold absolute pressure) monitor conditions for engine control.
