Anophelesmygger

Anophelesmygger is a species of mosquito in the genus Anopheles, family Culicidae. It is known from tropical Southeast Asia and has been the subject of taxonomic studies aimed at clarifying species diversity within the Anopheles complex.

The species was formally described in 2018 by researchers conducting field surveys in Borneo and surrounding areas. The specific epithet mygger honors a local entomological contributor involved in the collection and identification of the type material. The holotype and paratypes were collected from temporary freshwater habitats in lowland rainforest settings.

Adults of Anophelesmygger are medium-sized with a dark brown to black coloration and lighter scaling along the wing margins. Distinctive wing patterning and the relative lengths of the palps and antennae help distinguish it from closely related species. Male mosquitoes display characteristic banding on the legs that aids in field identification, while females exhibit typical Anopheles resting posture.

Larval development occurs in freshwater habitats such as rain pools, puddles, and irrigation channels. Larvae are generally aquatic filter feeders and occupy the upper portion of the water column. The species is primarily nocturnal, with host-seeking driven by carbon dioxide and other host cues, as observed in many Anopheles species.

Distribution and vector status: Confirmed records come from Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) and nearby regions in Malaysia, with potential range extending to other parts of the Borneo landscape. There is no published evidence that Anophelesmygger transmits human malaria pathogens; however, researchers continue to monitor vector potential as part of broader entomological surveillance.
