Their fur ranges from pale buff to creamy white, and their wing membranes are semi-translucent with a faint amber glow along the veins. They have relatively large eyes for a bat and use a broad echolocation call; in fiction, this call is sometimes depicted as soothing or comforting to listeners.

Ecology and behavior

They roost in caves, hollow trees, or ruined structures, forming small colonies. Ambulbats are insectivorous, but many stories place them near herb gardens, foraging among flowers at dusk. In various myths, ambulbats are said to process plant compounds or carry healing herbs in their mouths or claws, and their presence is believed to contribute to recovery from illness in nearby people.

Narrative depictions often portray ambulbats as breeding seasonally, raising one pup with strong maternal care. Social bonds within colonies are described as cooperative, with adults helping to rear young.
