Alvásparalízissel, also known as sleep paralysis, is a temporary inability to move or speak that occurs when a person is waking up or falling asleep. It is a relatively common phenomenon, with estimates suggesting that between 8% and 50% of people experience it at least once in their lifetime. During an episode of sleep paralysis, an individual may feel a sense of pressure on their chest and experience hallucinations, which can be visual, auditory, or tactile. These hallucinations are often frightening and can include seeing shadowy figures, hearing voices, or feeling a sense of being touched or pushed.

The exact cause of sleep paralysis is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to disruptions in the sleep-wake cycle. It is thought to occur when the brain is partially awake but the body's muscles remain in a state of atonia, a natural paralysis that prevents us from acting out our dreams. Certain factors may increase the likelihood of experiencing sleep paralysis, including sleep deprivation, irregular sleep schedules, stress, anxiety, and certain sleep disorders like narcolepsy. Genetics may also play a role.

While sleep paralysis can be a distressing experience, it is generally harmless and does not cause long-term physical or psychological damage. Episodes typically last from a few seconds to a few minutes. There is no specific cure for sleep paralysis, but managing underlying sleep issues and reducing stress can help decrease the frequency and intensity of episodes. Maintaining good sleep hygiene, such as sticking to a regular sleep schedule and creating a relaxing bedtime routine, is often recommended. If sleep paralysis is frequent or causing significant distress, consulting a healthcare professional for further evaluation and management is advisable.
