They can provide a barrier to moisture and gases and improve heat dissipation on some substrates. Applications include packaging films (metalized film for food and pharmaceutical packaging), architectural and insulation products, reflective surfaces for lighting and solar reflectors, EMI shielding in electronics, and heat exchangers in automotive and aerospace components.

Considerations: coating adhesion, substrate compatibility, and potential diffusion or diffusion-limited interactions at high temperatures. The coating thickness is critical for performance and cost. When applied to recyclable materials, coatings can complicate recycling; some aluminum-coated products are designed for recycling streams, while others are not. Overall, aluminum coating is valued for combining light weight with protective or functional surface properties.
