Aloës

Aloës, commonly known simply as aloes, refers to the succulent flowering plants in the genus Aloe, within the family Asphodelaceae. They are native to arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula and are cultivated worldwide for ornamental use as well as for commercial products derived from their leaves.

Aloës are perennial, evergreen plants that form rosettes of thick, fleshy leaves. Leaves are typically green or gray-green, often with irregular markings and spiny margins. The plants produce tall flower stalks with tubular blossoms, which are usually yellow, orange, or red and attract pollinators such as bees and birds. Aloès are well adapted to drought and poor soils, requiring well-draining soil and bright light; overwatering can lead to rot.

Taxonomically, the genus Aloe comprises many species. The best known is Aloe vera (also called Aloe barbadensis in some classifications), widely used in cosmetic and health products. Other cultivated species include Aloe ferox and Aloe arborescens. In modern classifications, Aloe is placed in the family Asphodelaceae, subfamily Asphodeloideae, with multiple species commonly grown for ornamental appeal or specialized uses.

Uses and cultivation: Aloës are popular garden plants and houseplants in appropriate climates, valued for their architectural form and low maintenance. They are propagated by offsets (pups) or, less commonly, by seed. The gel contained in the leaf pulp is used in cosmetics and topical remedies; the latex-like sap contains aloin, historically used as a laxative, but ingestion can cause irritation and adverse effects, and regulated use is advised. Safety considerations include potential skin irritation and variability in product quality.
