Alipainevahvisteiden, commonly known as vacuum boosters, are devices used in braking systems to amplify the force applied by the driver. They work by utilizing the vacuum pressure present in the engine's intake manifold. When the driver presses the brake pedal, a valve opens, allowing this vacuum to create a differential pressure across a diaphragm within the booster. This pressure difference multiplies the force the driver applies to the pedal, transferring a much larger force to the master cylinder, which in turn actuates the brakes. This amplification significantly reduces the effort required by the driver to stop the vehicle, making braking safer and more comfortable.

The basic principle of operation involves a sealed housing divided by a diaphragm. One side of the diaphragm is exposed to engine vacuum, while the other side is connected to the atmosphere or a lower vacuum level when the brake pedal is pressed. A control valve regulates the flow of air and vacuum to the diaphragm chamber. When the brake pedal is not pressed, both sides of the diaphragm are at relatively equal pressure, and there is no assistance. As the pedal is depressed, the control valve directs vacuum to one side of the diaphragm, creating a pressure imbalance that pushes the diaphragm and, consequently, a pushrod that connects to the master cylinder.

Alipainevahvisteiden are a crucial component in most modern automotive braking systems. Their effectiveness allows for smaller, lighter brake components and reduces driver fatigue, especially during prolonged braking or in emergency situations. Without them, braking systems would require much greater pedal force, potentially making them less responsive and more difficult to operate. They are typically located between the brake pedal and the master cylinder.
