Aleve

Aleve is a brand name for naproxen sodium, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, reduce fever, and decrease inflammation. It is available OTC in forms such as tablets, caplets, gel capsules, and liquid gels. Each dose contains naproxen sodium; follow the product label and use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration. Aleve is used for acute musculoskeletal pain, headaches, dental pain, menstrual cramps, and arthritis symptoms, and may be used for short-term fever reduction when other antipyretics are unsuitable.

Naproxen works by inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, reducing prostaglandin production. The efficacy and adverse effect profile are similar to other NSAIDs.

Common side effects include stomach upset, heartburn, and nausea. More serious risks include gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding, kidney effects, high blood pressure, and, with long-term use, cardiovascular risk. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time, and exercise caution in older adults or those with kidney or gastrointestinal disease, or when taking other NSAIDs, anticoagulants, or steroids.

Naproxen is generally avoided in pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, and should be used in children only under medical supervision. Avoid excessive alcohol while taking naproxen.
