Agilekehitys, often referred to as agile development, is a project management and software development approach that emphasizes iterative development, collaboration, and flexibility. It originated as a response to the perceived limitations of traditional, sequential development models such as the waterfall model, which could be rigid and slow to adapt to changing requirements. Agile methodologies break down projects into smaller, manageable cycles called iterations or sprints, typically lasting one to four weeks.

The core principles of agile development are outlined in the Agile Manifesto, which values individuals and interactions over processes and tools, working software over comprehensive documentation, customer collaboration over contract negotiation, and responding to change over following a plan. This means that teams work closely with stakeholders, including customers, to gather feedback regularly and make adjustments to the project as needed.

Common agile frameworks include Scrum, Kanban, and Extreme Programming (XP). Scrum, for instance, uses defined roles such as Product Owner, Scrum Master, and Development Team, and employs specific events like sprint planning, daily scrums, sprint reviews, and sprint retrospectives to manage the workflow. Kanban focuses on visualizing work, limiting work in progress, and continuously improving the flow of tasks. Agile development aims to deliver value to customers more rapidly and to allow for greater adaptability in the face of evolving business needs and technical challenges.
