Agetragenes

Agetragenes, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a progressive eye condition that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision. It is the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 50. AMD is categorized into two types: dry and wet.

Dry AMD is the more common form, accounting for about 90% of cases. It begins with the formation of small deposits called drusen beneath the retina. These deposits can cause damage to the retina over time, leading to vision loss. Dry AMD typically progresses slowly and may not cause significant vision problems for many years.

Wet AMD, on the other hand, is less common but more severe. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the macula, leading to leakage and scarring. This can result in rapid and significant vision loss. Wet AMD can be treated with injections of anti-VEGF drugs, which help to stop the growth of these abnormal blood vessels.

Risk factors for AMD include age, smoking, obesity, and a family history of the condition. Regular eye exams are crucial for early detection and management of AMD. Early intervention can help slow the progression of the disease and preserve vision.

There is currently no cure for AMD, but lifestyle changes and medical treatments can help manage symptoms and slow the progression of the condition. Maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking are important steps in preventing and managing AMD.
