Agapornis

Agapornis is a genus of small parrots in the family Psittaculidae, commonly known as lovebirds. They are native to sub-Saharan Africa, where they occupy a variety of habitats from open savannas and woodlands to riverine forests. Adults are typically 12 to 15 centimeters long and display bright green plumage with species-specific facial markings. Lovebirds are known for their social behavior and for forming strong, lifelong pair bonds.

Nine species are recognized within Agapornis. Notable examples include the rosy-faced lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis) and the masked lovebird (Agapornis personatus); other members include several green-bodied species with contrasting head or facial patterns.

Behavior and reproduction: In the wild, they may form flocks but breed as monogamous pairs. They nest in tree cavities or similar holes. Clutch size is typically four to six eggs; incubation lasts about 21 to 23 days, and fledging occurs after roughly five to seven weeks.

In captivity: Lovebirds are popular pet birds and are kept in pairs or small groups. They require social interaction and enrichment. A balanced diet includes fresh fruits and vegetables, high-quality pellets, and limited seeds. They exhibit many color mutations in captivity due to selective breeding.

Conservation: Wild populations face pressures from habitat loss and capture for the pet trade. Some species are common and secure, while others are more restricted; trade and protection regulations vary by region.
