Afløbsnettet, or the sewer network, refers to the system of underground pipes, canals, and related infrastructure used to collect and transport wastewater and, in some cases, stormwater from buildings and streets to treatment facilities. The network is typically managed by a municipal water utility or a regional authority and is essential for urban sanitation, flood control, and environmental protection.

The network comprises several components. Sanitary sewers carry wastewater from homes and businesses, while stormwater drains collect rainwater and surface runoff. In many systems stairs and infrastructure include pumping stations, gravity conduits, interceptor lines, manholes, and outlet connections to treatment plants. Some cities operate combined sewer systems where sanitary and stormwater flows share pipes; others use separated systems that keep these streams separate to reduce overflows.

Operation and maintenance focus on reliable flow, leak prevention, and pollutant reduction. Utilities monitor capacity, perform regular cleaning and inspection (often using CCTV cameras), repair defects, and manage infiltration and exfiltration. During heavy rainfall, pumping stations and network management aim to prevent flooding and uncontrolled discharges.

Function and importance extend beyond sanitation. A well-maintained afløbsnet can reduce health risks, limit sewer overflows, protect waterways, and support urban development. In many regions, the networks face challenges from aging pipes, tree roots, blockages, and climate-related increases in rainfall, prompting rehabilitation projects, upgrades, and innovative solutions such as pipe relining and smart monitoring. Planning and regulation govern connections, design standards, and environmental compliance to ensure a safe and resilient sewer system.
