Acetatebased describes materials and compounds that are derived from acetate groups or that rely on acetate esters or salts as a defining feature. In practice, the term covers low‑molecular‑weight esters such as ethyl acetate, acetate‑derived polymers like cellulose acetate, and polyvinyl acetate polymers used in adhesives, as well as inorganic acetates used in buffers and food additives.

Acetate esters are widely used solvents due to their balance of polarity and volatility. Ethyl acetate, for example, is common in nail polish remover and paint thinners, while other acetates such as butyl acetate and isopropyl acetate serve similar roles in coatings and cleaning products. These solvents are valued for relatively good solvency and moderate environmental impact compared with some other solvents, though they are typically flammable and require proper handling.

Polymers based on acetates include cellulose acetate and vinyl acetate–based polymers. Cellulose acetate is produced by acetylating cellulose and is used in textile fibers, films, coatings, and cigarette filters. The degree of substitution and acetyl content influence its solubility and mechanical properties. Polyvinyl acetate is formed from vinyl acetate monomers and is a major component in paints, coatings, and pressure‑sensitive adhesives, as well as some wood glues.

Inorganic acetates such as sodium acetate and calcium acetate serve as buffering salts in laboratories and food products; calcium acetate also has applications in de‑icing, agricultural supply, and certain industrial processes. Safety and environmental considerations vary by compound, with solvent esters generally requiring ventilation and adherence to flammability guidelines.
