The name "accentoto" is derived from the Spanish term *acento*, meaning "accent," and *toto*, a colloquial term for a small drum or percussion instrument. These instruments are often used in traditional folk music, particularly in genres such as *danzón*, *son*, and *merengue*.

An accentoto is typically a small, hand-held drum made from a hollowed-out gourd or a wooden cylinder covered with animal skin, such as cowhide or goat skin. The drum is played by striking the skin with the fingers or a small stick, producing a sharp, accented sound that emphasizes the rhythm of the music. The instrument is often paired with other percussion instruments like the *claves*, *bongos*, or *congas* to create a fuller, more complex rhythmic texture.
