Abbruchtokens

Abbruchtokens is a term used in software engineering to describe a mechanism for signaling cooperative cancellation of an operation or workflow. In this concept, a token represents the right or instruction for a running task to stop, allowing the system to terminate work in an orderly fashion without abruptly killing processes.

Etymology and scope: the name derives from the German word Abbruch, meaning abort or termination, combined with token, a common computing term for a small data object used to convey state or intent. In practice, Abbruchtokens are closely related to cancellation tokens found in many programming environments, but the term is used here to emphasize the signaling aspect within German-language or bilingual documentation.

Mechanism and lifecycle: an Abbruchtoken is typically created by a controlling component (such as a workflow manager or request handler) and passed to one or more tasks. The controlling component can cancel the token at any time, and the receiving tasks periodically check the token’s status. If cancellation is signaled, tasks attempt graceful termination and release resources. Tokens may include metadata such as a timestamp, reason for cancellation, and timeout information, and may be designed to be idempotent so repeated checks do not cause errors.

Applications and examples: Abbruchtokens are conceptually used in long-running computations, data processing pipelines, distributed workflows, and asynchronous programming. They align with established cancellation constructs such as .NET’s CancellationToken, JavaScript’s AbortController/AbortSignal, and similar patterns in other ecosystems, providing a standardized way to request termination across components.
