ALCOAprincipes
ALCOAprincipes, commonly referred to as ALCOA or ALCOA+, are a set of data integrity principles used to ensure the reliability of information in regulated environments such as pharmaceutical development, clinical research, and manufacturing. The framework emphasizes that data must remain trustworthy throughout its lifecycle, from creation and processing to storage and retrieval, and be suitable for audit and inspection.
The original five principles define core data attributes:
- Attributable: the record clearly identifies who created or modified it and when.
- Legible: the data are readable and understandable to authorized personnel.
- Contemporaneous: entries are made at the time of the activity or event.
- Original: the first recorded form or a true copy is preserved.
- Accurate: the data are correct, precise, and free from error.
ALCOA+ variants extend the framework with Complete, Consistent, Enduring, and Available to cover record completeness, uniform
Applications and regulatory relevance: regulators such as the FDA and EMA require adherence to data integrity
