AISoverlay

AISoverlay is a software concept and platform designed to overlay Automatic Identification System (AIS) data onto navigational charts and geographic information systems. It enables real-time vessel tracking and enhanced situational awareness by visualizing vessel positions, movements, and associated metadata on maps.

AISoverlay ingests AIS data from various sources, including VHF receivers and satellite AIS feeds. It decodes messages to extract information such as MMSI, vessel name, ship type, position, speed, course, heading, navigational status, and timestamp. The data are normalized and synchronized to provide coherent, time-accurate displays. Visualization is typically rendered on web or desktop map interfaces, using vector or raster charts and standard mapping libraries.

Architecture for AISoverlay solutions often employs a data pipeline that ingests AIS feeds, decodes and stores messages, and serves visualization data through APIs or direct client rendering. Server-side components may manage data normalization, history, and queries, while client-side maps handle rendering, interactivity, and user-defined overlays.
