This broad bracket covers roughly the years from the early 1500s to the late 1700s, though scholars sometimes anchor dates to particular events or ca. 1500–1800.

Historically, the 16th–18th centuries encompass the late Renaissance and the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, the rise of early modern states, and the Enlightenment. In Europe, events such as the Protestant Reformation (begins 1517), the Catholic Counter-Reformation, the growth of print culture, and the consolidations of centralized states marked the era. In science, figures like Copernicus, Vesalius, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton contributed to a shift in understanding and method. In culture, Baroque art and music flourished; in politics, mercantilism and empire-building expanded European influence worldwide.

Limitations: the periodization is Eurocentric, and different regions followed distinct trajectories. Asia, Africa, and the Americas experienced parallel transformations at different times, including explorations, trade networks, and scientific or intellectual developments that do not map neatly onto Western calendars.

Usage: The label is common in surveys, course syllabi, museum labels, and general histories to describe a long modernizing epoch. The expression 16th18th is an informal shorthand rather than a precise historical term.
