Consolidation is the act or process of combining separate entities into a single, more cohesive unit. The term is used across fields to describe moves toward greater integration, stability, or strength.

In business, consolidation refers to combining two or more companies into one entity through merger or acquisition. It can create economies of scale, expand market reach, or simplify governance; post-consolidation activity often includes brand rationalization and integrated reporting.

In accounting, consolidation is the method for presenting the financial results of a group as a single economic entity. Intercompany transactions are eliminated, non-controlling interests are reported, and standards such as IFRS 10 and ASC 810 govern the process.

In law, consolidation merges related cases into one proceeding to avoid duplication and ensure consistent rulings. Courts assess related issues, determine the scope of consolidation, and may preserve individual judgments where appropriate.

In medicine and science, consolidation has multiple senses: pulmonary consolidation describes solidification of lung tissue due to infection, while memory consolidation refers to stabilizing short-term memories into long-term storage, often during sleep. Both senses reflect a move from dispersed elements toward a stable, integrated state.
