Összetapadások, commonly translated as adhesions, are bands of scar-like tissue that can form in the body, typically within the abdomen. They can occur after surgery, infection, or inflammation. These adhesions can connect organs or tissues that are not normally joined together. While often asymptomatic, adhesions can cause pain or other complications if they interfere with normal bodily functions.

The formation of adhesions is a natural part of the healing process following injury or surgery. The body produces fibrin, a protein involved in blood clotting, to repair damaged tissues. In some cases, this fibrin mesh does not dissolve completely and instead matures into collagen, forming a fibrous adhesion. Factors that can increase the risk of adhesion formation include the type and duration of surgery, the presence of infection, and underlying inflammatory conditions.

Complications arising from adhesions can include bowel obstruction, infertility, and chronic pelvic pain. Bowel obstruction occurs when adhesions wrap around or kink the intestines, preventing the normal passage of food and waste. In women, adhesions can distort pelvic anatomy and impede egg or sperm transport, leading to infertility. Chronic pain can result from adhesions pulling on organs or nerves. Diagnosis often involves imaging techniques like CT scans or ultrasounds. Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and may range from pain management to surgical intervention to remove the adhesions.
