Õhuvõimetust, also known as air inferiority or loss of air superiority, is a military term describing a situation where one side in a conflict has decisively lost control of the airspace to the opposing force. This means the enemy can operate their aircraft freely within the contested airspace with little to no effective opposition.

The consequences of õhuvõimetust can be severe for the side experiencing it. It allows the enemy to conduct unrestricted aerial reconnaissance, providing valuable intelligence on troop movements, positions, and infrastructure. Furthermore, the enemy can carry out unhindered bombing and strafing runs against ground targets, including troops, vehicles, artillery, and supply lines, significantly degrading the ability to conduct ground operations. They can also interdict friendly air and ground transport, disrupting logistics and reinforcement efforts.

Achieving air superiority is a primary objective in modern warfare. It is typically gained through a combination of factors including the numerical superiority of aircraft, technological advancements, effective pilot training, superior air defense systems, and successful suppression or destruction of enemy air bases and air defense networks. The loss of air superiority can lead to the collapse of front lines, strategic defeats, and ultimately, the loss of the war itself. Conversely, maintaining air superiority enables offensive ground operations, protects friendly forces, and allows for the unimpeded use of air power for strategic and tactical objectives.
