ágynem

Ágynem, in Hungarian, refers to bed linen—textiles used on a bed for sleeping and comfort. In contemporary usage the standard term is ágynemű, and ágynem a form of shorthand that is now largely regional or archaic. Bedding generally includes sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, blankets and bedspreads, with the exact items varying by season and preference.

Etymology and terminology notes: the word combines ágy (bed) with nemű (linen or fabric) and historically designated textiles intended for use on a bed. In everyday language, ágynemű is the preferred term, while ágynem may still appear in older texts or regional speech.

Typical components and variants: a common ágynemű garnitúra (bedding set) includes a sheet (lepedő), one or more pillowcases (párnahuzat), and a duvet cover or quilt cover (ágyneműhuzat). A bedspread (ágytakaró) or blanket may be included, and some sets provide additional pillowcases. Materials vary widely, including cotton, cotton blends, linen, microfibre and flannel, with choices affecting softness, warmth and care needs.

Care and maintenance: follow the care labels. Cotton and blends are usually machine washable at moderate to high temperatures (often 40–60°C), while linen is typically washed cooler. Avoid chlorine bleach when possible; tumble dry on a low setting or line dry. Ironing requirements depend on fabric type and desired finish.
