Linentextiles are fabrics and textile products made from flax fiber. The term describes yarns, fabrics, and finished goods derived from flax, one of the oldest natural fibers used in textiles. Flax is grown in temperate regions, and linen fiber is produced through steps such as retting, breaking, scutching, and hackling before spinning into yarns.

Linen fabrics are valued for high tensile strength, especially when wet, excellent moisture absorption, breathability, and a cool, crisp hand. They tend to wrinkle easily and can feel coarse in coarser forms, but finer linen can be soft and smooth with use. Linen is produced in a range of weaves, including plain weave, twill, satin, and damask, and finishes may include softening, calendering, or dyeing. The material is commonly used in clothing, bed linens, table linens, and some upholstery.

Production and processing begin with cultivating flax, harvesting the fibers, and extracting the long bast fibers. The fibers are then cleaned, combed, spun into yarns, and woven or knitted into fabric. Finishing steps can enhance softness, luster, dye uptake, and durability. Linen can be blended with other fibers to modify hand, drape, and performance.

Sustainability and market trends emphasize flax’s relatively low water use and biodegradability versus some other fibers, though retting and processing can impact environmental performance. Many linen producers pursue certifications such as OEKO-TEX or GOTS, and some regions maintain reputations for high-quality linen, including Belgium, France, Ireland, Poland, and Lithuania. Global demand remains strong in high-end apparel and home textiles.
