Üvegfajták refers to types of glass. Glass is an amorphous solid, meaning its atoms are arranged randomly, unlike crystalline solids. It is typically transparent and brittle. The most common type of glass is soda-lime glass, which is used for windows, bottles, and everyday tableware. This type of glass is made from silica, soda ash (sodium carbonate), and limestone (calcium carbonate).

Another important category is borosilicate glass. This glass contains boron oxide, which gives it excellent resistance to thermal shock and chemical corrosion. Pyrex cookware and laboratory glassware are often made from borosilicate glass due to these properties. Lead glass, also known as crystal glass, contains lead oxide. This addition increases the glass's refractive index, making it sparkle, and also makes it softer and easier to cut and engrave. It is often used for decorative items and fine stemware.

Tempered glass is a safety glass that has been treated with heat or chemical processes to increase its strength. When it breaks, it shatters into small, relatively harmless pieces rather than sharp shards. This makes it suitable for applications where safety is a concern, such as car windows and shower doors. Laminated glass is another safety glass, consisting of two layers of glass bonded together by a plastic interlayer, typically polyvinyl butyral (PVB). If the glass breaks, the interlayer holds the fragments together, preventing them from scattering. This type is used in windshields and security glazing. Different additives and manufacturing processes can create a wide array of glass types with specific properties for diverse applications.
