Überblähung

Überblähung, also known as bloating or abdominal distension, is a subjective sensation of fullness or enlargement in the abdomen. It is often accompanied by visible swelling of the belly. While it is a common symptom, it can cause discomfort and distress for many individuals.

The causes of Überblähung are varied and can include gastrointestinal issues such as constipation, gas production from the breakdown of certain foods by gut bacteria, and disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Eating habits can also contribute, such as consuming large meals too quickly, swallowing air while eating or drinking, or the consumption of gas-producing foods like beans, broccoli, and carbonated beverages. Certain medical conditions, including fluid retention (ascites) due to liver disease or heart failure, and hormonal changes, particularly during the menstrual cycle in women, can also lead to Überblähung.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and sometimes diagnostic tests like imaging studies or endoscopic procedures to identify underlying causes. Management strategies focus on addressing the root cause. This may include dietary modifications, such as reducing intake of gas-producing foods and carbonated drinks, improving eating habits, and increasing fiber intake if constipation is a factor. Medications to relieve gas or treat underlying conditions may also be prescribed. For some, stress management techniques can be beneficial as stress can exacerbate digestive symptoms.
