Ögoninflammationer

Ögoninflammationer, also known as conjunctivitis, is a common condition affecting the conjunctiva, the thin transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. It is characterized by inflammation of this membrane, leading to various symptoms.

The causes of conjunctivitis can be diverse. Infectious conjunctivitis can be viral or bacterial. Viral conjunctivitis is often associated with cold or flu symptoms and is highly contagious. Bacterial conjunctivitis can be caused by various bacteria and may result in a thicker, colored discharge. Allergic conjunctivitis is a non-infectious form triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, and it typically affects both eyes. Irritant conjunctivitis can occur due to exposure to smoke, chemicals, or foreign bodies in the eye.

Symptoms of ögoninflammationer commonly include redness of the eye, itching, burning, a gritty sensation, increased tearing, and sometimes a discharge that can be watery, white, yellow, or green depending on the cause. Swelling of the eyelids can also occur.

Diagnosis is usually based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination of the eye. In some cases, a swab of the discharge may be taken for laboratory analysis to identify the causative agent, especially for bacterial infections.

Treatment for ögoninflammationer depends on the underlying cause. Viral conjunctivitis often resolves on its own within a week or two, with supportive care such as artificial tears to alleviate discomfort. Bacterial conjunctivitis is treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments. Allergic conjunctivitis is managed by avoiding allergens and using antihistamine eye drops or oral medications. Irritant conjunctivitis requires removing the irritant and may involve artificial tears. Good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, are important to prevent the spread of infectious conjunctivitis.
