Återgängbarhet, often translated as idempotence in English, is a property of certain operations in mathematics and computer science. An operation is considered återgängbar if applying it multiple times produces the same result as applying it only once. In simpler terms, performing the operation repeatedly has no additional effect beyond the first application.

For example, in mathematics, the operation of taking the absolute value of a number is återgängbar. The absolute value of -5 is 5, and taking the absolute value of 5 again results in 5. Similarly, the operation of setting a variable to a specific value is also återgängbar. If you set a variable `x` to 10, and then set `x` to 10 again, the value of `x` remains 10.

In computer science, återgängbarhet is a crucial concept, particularly in areas like distributed systems, network protocols, and database transactions. Designing operations to be återgängbar helps to build more robust and reliable systems. If a request is sent multiple times due to network issues or retries, an återgängbar operation ensures that the system's state remains consistent, preventing unintended side effects.

Examples of återgängbar operations in computing include retrieving data, deleting a resource if it exists, or updating a resource to a specific state. Operations that are not återgängbara include incrementing a counter or sending an email, as repeating these actions would change the system's state or produce new outputs each time.
