Yövirtsaaminen, also known as nocturnal enuresis or bedwetting, is the involuntary loss of urine during sleep in individuals who are typically expected to have bladder control. It is a common condition, particularly in young children, and is defined as involuntary urination at least twice a month in children over the age of five, or any involuntary urination in children over the age of six. While most common in children, it can persist into adolescence and adulthood in some cases.

The causes of yövirtsaaminen are multifaceted and can include a combination of factors. These may involve the body producing too much urine at night, a reduced ability of the bladder to hold urine, or a delay in the development of the signals between the brain and the bladder that indicate a full bladder. Genetic predisposition also plays a role, with children of parents who experienced bedwetting being more likely to do so themselves. Certain medical conditions, such as urinary tract infections, diabetes, or sleep apnea, can also contribute to or cause bedwetting.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, a physical examination, and sometimes urine tests to rule out underlying medical issues. Treatment approaches vary depending on the age of the individual and the underlying cause. For children, strategies often include behavioral interventions such as fluid restriction before bedtime, scheduled voiding, and bladder training. Alarm devices that wake the child when wet are also a common and effective treatment. In some cases, medication may be prescribed. While often a source of distress for individuals and families, yövirtsaaminen is usually a benign condition that resolves with time and appropriate management.
