Yhteiskomposto, or community composting, is a system in which residents, neighborhoods, schools, or organizations collectively manage the composting of organic waste to produce usable soil amendments. It emphasizes shared responsibility and local involvement rather than individual household programs alone.

Programs may be run by municipalities, non-profit organizations, or volunteer groups and can involve curbside collection, neighborhood drop-off sites, or on-site composting facilities at shared spaces such as community gardens or apartment complexes.

Common methods include aerobic composting in windrows or static piles, or in-vessel systems; vermicomposting using earthworms is another approach.

Acceptable inputs typically include fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, and yard waste; many programs restrict meat, dairy, fats, and oils to avoid pests and odors; some programs accept shredded paper or cardboard if clean.

Benefits include reduced landfill use and methane emissions, reduced transportation costs, and the production of finished compost that improves soil health and supports local gardens; community involvement can raise awareness of waste management and climate goals.

Challenges include contamination with non-compostable materials, odors and pest management, space requirements, and the need for ongoing funding, maintenance, and coordination among participants. Successful programs often rely on clear guidelines, training, and local leadership.
