Yhdistys is a Finnish term that translates to "association" or "society." In Finland, a yhdistys refers to a non-profit organization formed by individuals who share a common interest, purpose, or goal. These organizations are legally recognized and operate under specific Finnish legislation, primarily the Act on Associations (Yhdistyslaki).

The primary purpose of a yhdistys can vary widely. It might be established for cultural, educational, recreational, social, charitable, or even political aims. Members typically join to collectively pursue these objectives, which can include organizing events, providing services, advocating for certain causes, or fostering a community around a shared interest.

To form a yhdistys, a minimum of three founding members is generally required. They must draft and approve statutes (säännöt) that outline the association's name, purpose, membership rules, governing bodies, decision-making processes, and financial management. The association must then be registered with the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (Patentti- ja rekisterihallitus) to gain legal status and the ability to act as a legal entity.

Yhdistys typically have a democratic structure, with a general meeting of members serving as the highest decision-making body. An executive committee or board (hallitus) is usually elected to manage the day-to-day operations. Associations can be funded through membership fees, donations, grants, and revenue generated from their activities. They are generally exempt from income tax on their core activities.
