Yhdistelmävaihde, literally “combined gearbox” in Finnish, is a term used to describe a transmission system that integrates more than one power flow within a single drivetrain. In automotive contexts, the concept most often refers to a hybrid driveline that blends propulsion from an internal combustion engine with an electric motor through a shared gear train.

Configurations of yhdistelmävaihde vary by manufacturer and application. A common approach uses a planetary gear set combined with an electric machine, creating a power-split arrangement that can direct torque from the engine, the electric motor, or both. This enables functions such as electric assist, smooth torque delivery, and regenerative braking. Some systems resemble an automatic or continuously variable transmission in operation, while others employ a more traditional multi-gear layout with integrated electrical control.

Benefits of yhdistelmävaihde include improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, especially in urban driving with frequent starts and stops.
