Yeshivas are Jewish religious educational institutions dedicated to the study of Torah, with a strong emphasis on Talmud and rabbinic literature. The term comes from the Hebrew word for “houses of learning,” and in practice a yeshiva is a community organized around intensive text study. In traditional settings, students engage in chavrutah, or paired study, within a beit midrash, or house of study. Daily life centers on prayer, meals, and long hours of learning, guided by senior scholars known as rosh yeshiva.

Curriculum and method typically focus on Talmudic analysis, its commentaries, and halakhic (rabbinic law) discussions, complemented by studies in Tanakh, Rambam and other rabbinic authorities, and occasionally philosophy or ethics. Instruction emphasizes close reading, argument, and the development of religious leadership skills. Hebrew and Aramaic are commonly used in source texts.

Types and structure:

- Yeshiva gedolah: post-high school institutes for single men, usually long-term and full-time.

- Yeshiva ketana: programs for younger students or high school-aged learners in some communities.

- Kollel: advanced, often married men who study full-time, frequently with stipends.

- Women’s programs: in many communities, there are women’s yeshivot or midrashot focused on text study and religious law, operating separately from traditional male yeshivas.

Geographic distribution and variation:

In Israel, yeshivot are widespread and diverse, reflecting different communities and approaches. In North America and elsewhere, yeshivot form networks associated with Orthodox groups, including Hasidic and Lithuanian-style traditions. While the core aim remains the same—deep engagement with traditional texts—programs vary in emphasis, language, and affiliation.
