Werkcycli, literally “work cycles” in Dutch, is a concept used in production management and organizational work design to describe recurring sequences of tasks that together complete a unit of output. A werkcyclus defines not only the activities to be performed but also their timing, order, and typical durations within a repetitive work setting.

It is applied in manufacturing to structure operations into repeatable cycles that can be planned around demand, capacity, and quality control. The idea is to standardize work so that performance can be measured, problems detected quickly, and improvements implemented in a controlled manner. The term is also used more broadly to describe iterative work patterns in service delivery, logistics, and knowledge work.

A typical werkcyklus includes planning, execution, monitoring, and review, with explicit cycle time, setup times, and checkpoints. Key metrics often tracked are cycle time, throughput, defect rate, and utilization. Feedback loops allow adjustments to be made within or between cycles to reduce waste and improve consistency.

Benefits of implementing werkcycli include improved predictability, better resource alignment, faster detection of anomalies, and easier standardization of processes. Potential drawbacks are reduced flexibility if cycles are too rigid, the need for reliable data collection, and the risk of optimizing for the cycle at the expense of overall system performance.
