A waterbeheergebied, in the Dutch context, is a defined spatial unit used for planning and carrying out water management activities. It encompasses the landscape, watercourses, and adjacent areas that are considered together for safeguarding flood safety, managing water quantity, and maintaining water quality. The concept supports integrated approaches to how water, soil, nature, and land use interact.

The boundaries of a waterbeheergebied are usually based on hydrological catchments or river basins, but they can also align with administrative divisions such as municipalities or provinces when practical for governance and coordination. The aim is to enable coherent policy and project planning across the area to address complex water-related challenges.

In practice, a waterbeheergebied is used by regional water authorities, known as waterschappen, as a planning and management unit. Within the gebied, they develop long-term policies, execute flood protection measures (such as dike heightening and storm surge barriers), regulate drainage and groundwater, improve water quality and wastewater treatment, and pursue ecological and recreational objectives. The area is also considered in national frameworks like the Delta Programme and the European Water Framework Directive, ensuring coordination with other authorities and sectors.

While the waterbeheergebied serves as an organizing concept for water management, it is not a separate legal entity. Governance and responsibilities rest with the relevant water board and collaborating regional authorities, with the area providing a common basis for decisions, investments, and monitoring.
