Væskedressinger, also known as fluid dressing or wet-to-dry dressing, is a wound care technique used to promote healing. This method involves applying a moist dressing to a wound and allowing it to dry out, which then adheres to the wound bed. As the dressing is removed, it helps to debride the wound by lifting away dead tissue, exudate, and debris.

The process typically begins with preparing a sterile gauze or absorbent material and saturating it with a sterile solution, such as saline. The moist gauze is then placed directly into the wound, ensuring good contact with all surfaces. Once in place, the gauze is covered with a dry, secondary dressing to absorb excess moisture and protect the wound. As the primary dressing dries, it becomes integrated with the wound debris.

When it is time to change the dressing, the dry outer layers are removed first. The now dry and adhered primary dressing is then gently removed, ideally pulling away loosely attached non-viable tissue. This mechanical debridement is a key characteristic of the væskedressing technique. The wound is then cleaned, and a new moist dressing is applied.

Væskedressinger are often used for wounds with moderate to heavy exudate, or for wounds requiring mechanical debridement. While effective for removing slough and debris, the process can be painful for the patient due to the adherence of the dressing to healthy granulation tissue. Therefore, its use may be limited in certain situations or combined with other wound care modalities. Modern wound care has seen the development of less painful debridement methods, but væskedressinger remains a recognized technique.
