Våtkobling, also known as a wet clutch or wet multi-plate clutch, is a type of friction clutch used primarily in motorcycles and some all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). Unlike dry clutches, which rely on dry friction plates to transfer torque, a våtkobling operates submerged in a bath of oil or transmission fluid. This lubrication reduces wear and heat buildup, allowing for smoother engagement and longer lifespan, especially in high-performance or heavy-duty applications.

The design typically consists of multiple friction plates interleaved with steel plates, all housed within a sealed casing filled with fluid. When engaged, the plates are pressed together by hydraulic or mechanical force, transferring power from the engine to the transmission. The oil lubricates the plates, dissipating heat and minimizing friction loss, which is particularly beneficial in demanding conditions such as off-roading or high-speed riding.

Våtkobling systems are favored in motorcycles for their ability to handle higher torque loads and provide a more progressive engagement feel compared to dry clutches. They are also commonly found in automatic transmissions, where smooth power delivery is critical. However, they require regular maintenance, including fluid changes, to prevent contamination and ensure optimal performance. Over time, oil degradation can lead to reduced clutch efficiency or failure, making periodic inspections essential.

While våtkobling clutches offer advantages in durability and performance, they are generally more complex and costly to manufacture than dry clutches. Their use is less common in automotive applications but remains standard in many motorcycle and ATV designs due to their reliability in demanding environments.
