Väliskõrvas refers to the external ear, also known as the auricle or pinna. It is the visible part of the ear on the outside of the head. The primary function of the väliskõrvas is to collect sound waves and direct them into the ear canal. Its unique shape, with its folds and curves, helps in localizing the direction of sound.

The väliskõrvas is primarily composed of elastic cartilage covered by skin. The cartilage forms the framework of the ear, giving it its characteristic shape. Different parts of the väliskõrvas have specific anatomical names, including the helix, antihelix, concha, tragus, and lobule (earlobe). The lobule is unique in that it is composed of fatty tissue and lacks cartilage.

The väliskõrvas is innervated by several cranial nerves, providing sensation to the area. It also has a rich blood supply. Despite its relatively exposed position, the väliskõrvas is generally resistant to injury, although it can be susceptible to conditions such as frostbite, burns, and minor lacerations. Infections, like perichondritis, can also affect the cartilage. Cosmetic concerns, such as prominent ears or deformities, may lead to surgical interventions like otoplasty. The appearance of the väliskõrvas can vary significantly among individuals due to genetic factors and environmental influences.
