A vuurstarter, Dutch for "fire starter," refers to any device or material used to ignite a fire. The primary purpose of a vuurstarter is to create a flame or spark that can then be transferred to tinder or kindling, ultimately leading to a sustainable fire. Vuurstarters vary widely in complexity and application, ranging from simple natural materials to sophisticated mechanical devices.

Common types of vuurstarters include matches, lighters, ferrocerium rods (often called fire steels), and flint and steel. Matches are a readily available and inexpensive option, consisting of a combustible head on a wooden or cardboard stick that ignites when struck against a rough surface. Lighters, both disposable and refillable, use a fuel source (like butane or naphtha) and a spark mechanism to produce a sustained flame. Ferrocerium rods, when scraped with a sharp object, produce very hot sparks capable of igniting tinder even in damp conditions, making them popular for outdoor and survival situations. Traditional flint and steel, while requiring more practice, also generate sparks through the impact of steel on flint.

Beyond these common examples, other vuurstarters can include magnifying glasses used to focus sunlight, chemical fire starters that react exothermically, and even specialized tools for campfires and barbecues. The choice of vuurstarter often depends on the intended use, environmental conditions, and personal preference for reliability and ease of use.
