Vuurstarters is a term used to describe various tools and materials designed to initiate and sustain a flame for activities such as camping, survival, or everyday fire-making. The primary function of a vuurstarter is to provide a reliable and efficient method of creating fire, especially in challenging environmental conditions.

Common types of vuurstarters include ferrocerium rods, also known as "ferro rods," which produce sparks when scraped. These are highly durable and function even when wet. Another popular type is the magnesium fire starter, which combines a ferro rod with a block of magnesium that can be shaved off to create highly flammable tinder. Lighters, both disposable and refillable, are also prevalent, offering a convenient flame source. Matches, particularly waterproof or stormproof varieties, are a traditional and effective option. Beyond these, specialized tinder materials such as cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly, commercial fire starter cubes, or natural materials like birch bark and dry grass are often used in conjunction with a spark or flame source to help a fire catch and grow.
