Voimaspektroskopia, often translated as force spectroscopy or atomic force spectroscopy, is a technique used to measure the forces between individual atoms or molecules. It is a powerful tool in nanotechnology and materials science, allowing researchers to probe the mechanical properties of surfaces at the nanoscale. The most common implementation of voimaspektroskopia utilizes an atomic force microscope (AFM). In this setup, a sharp tip, typically attached to a flexible cantilever, is brought into close proximity with a sample surface.

As the tip interacts with the surface, it experiences forces that cause the cantilever to bend. By precisely measuring the deflection of the cantilever, researchers can determine the magnitude and direction of the forces acting on the tip. These forces can include van der Waals forces, electrostatic forces, magnetic forces, and even chemical bonding forces. The AFM tip can be scanned across the surface to create force maps, revealing variations in surface properties. Alternatively, the tip can be brought into contact with a single point and then retracted, generating a force-distance curve. This curve provides detailed information about adhesion, elasticity, and rupture forces.

Voimaspektroskopia is employed in a wide range of applications. It is used to study the mechanical strength of polymers, the adhesion of biomolecules, the stiffness of cell membranes, and the frictional properties of surfaces. The ability to perform these measurements at the single-molecule level provides unprecedented insight into the fundamental interactions that govern the behavior of materials.
